Ladies of Jazz & Swing: My Night at Villa Ottolini Tosi

July 10th, 2025 is a date I will carry with me for a long time. That evening, in the enchanting atmosphere of Villa Ottolini Tosi in Busto Arsizio, I had the joy of stepping on stage for a concert that felt like stepping into another world – a world where elegance, nostalgia, and the spirit of jazz intertwine.

Together with the wonderful Michele Fazio on piano and the brilliant Marco Brioschi on trumpet, I brought to life a project that is very close to my heart: Ladies of Jazz & Swing. It is my way of honoring the voices and stories of extraordinary women – Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Etta James – who shaped not only the history of jazz, but the way we feel music even today.

Every time I sing Billie’s God Bless the Child or Ella’s playful scat, I feel as if I am borrowing their courage and their light. Nina’s Feeling Good still gives me goosebumps when I let it explode into the night air, and Sarah’s Misty is like a soft embrace for both me and the audience. These songs are never just melodies; they are fragments of lives, emotions, and truths that continue to resonate through time.

That evening, as the warm July air wrapped around the villa’s courtyard, I could see the audience smiling, some closing their eyes, others swaying gently with the music. It was as if for a few hours, we were all connected by the same invisible thread woven by these legendary voices.

Performing live is always an adventure. With Michele’s poetic touch on the piano and Marco’s trumpet adding spark and soul, our music became something more than a concert – it became a shared journey. Our repertoire moved from classic swing numbers like Cheek to Cheek and All of Me to soulful ballads like At Last and Summertime. And of course, we couldn’t resist adding our personal touch to songs outside the jazz world – Purple Rain and Clocks among them – because jazz is also about re-imagining, re-telling, and keeping the music alive in new ways.

When the final notes faded into the night sky, I felt grateful – grateful for the people who came, for the chance to give voice to these timeless songs, and for the magical dialogue that only happens between musicians and their audience.

For me, Ladies of Jazz & Swing is not just a tribute. It is a way of keeping alive the strength, the elegance, and the humanity of the women who gave jazz its soul. And on that July evening in Busto Arsizio, under the lights of Villa Ottolini Tosi, I felt that their spirit was with us – smiling, singing, and reminding us why music will always be one of the most beautiful ways to connect with each other.

Il 10 luglio 2025 è una data che porterò con me a lungo. Quella sera, nella splendida atmosfera di Villa Ottolini Tosi a Busto Arsizio, ho avuto la gioia di salire sul palco per un concerto che è stato come entrare in un altro mondo – un mondo in cui eleganza, nostalgia e spirito del jazz si intrecciano.

Insieme al meraviglioso Michele Fazio al pianoforte e al brillante Marco Brioschi alla tromba, ho dato vita a un progetto che mi sta particolarmente a cuore: Ladies of Jazz & Swing. È il mio modo di rendere omaggio alle voci e alle storie di donne straordinarie – Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone, Etta James – che hanno segnato non solo la storia del jazz, ma anche il modo in cui oggi sentiamo e viviamo la musica.

Ogni volta che canto God Bless the Child di Billie o lo scat giocoso di Ella, ho la sensazione di prendere in prestito il loro coraggio e la loro luce. Feeling Good di Nina riesce ancora a darmi i brividi quando esplode nell’aria della notte, e Misty di Sarah è come un abbraccio delicato sia per me che per il pubblico. Queste canzoni non sono semplici melodie: sono frammenti di vita, emozioni e verità che continuano a risuonare nel tempo.

Quella sera, mentre l’aria calda di luglio avvolgeva il cortile della villa, vedevo i sorrisi del pubblico, alcuni con gli occhi chiusi, altri che si lasciavano cullare dal ritmo. Era come se, per qualche ora, fossimo tutti legati dallo stesso filo invisibile tessuto da queste voci leggendarie.

Il live è sempre un’avventura. Con il tocco poetico di Michele al pianoforte e la tromba di Marco a dare scintille e anima, la nostra musica è diventata qualcosa di più di un concerto – è stata un viaggio condiviso. Il nostro repertorio ha spaziato dai classici swing come Cheek to Cheek e All of Me a ballate intense come At Last e Summertime. E naturalmente non abbiamo resistito ad aggiungere il nostro tocco personale a brani al di fuori del jazz – come Purple Rain e Clocks – perché il jazz è anche reinterpretazione, reinvenzione e vita nuova che scorre dentro la musica.

Quando le ultime note si sono dissolte nel cielo della notte, mi sono sentita grata – grata per le persone presenti, per la possibilità di dare voce a canzoni senza tempo, e per quel dialogo magico che nasce solo tra musicisti e pubblico.

Per me, Ladies of Jazz & Swing non è solo un tributo. È un modo per mantenere viva la forza, l’eleganza e l’umanità delle donne che hanno dato al jazz la sua anima. E in quella sera di luglio a Busto Arsizio, sotto le luci di Villa Ottolini Tosi, ho sentito che il loro spirito era lì con noi – a sorridere, cantare e ricordarci perché la musica resterà sempre uno dei modi più belli per connetterci gli uni agli altri.
